The Story Behind the Design

When our daughter, Lola (Magnolia), was just 9 months old, what we thought was a sore leg turned into a diagnosis we had never even heard of: Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH); a rare disease that affects only a handful of children each year.

Since then, our family has learned a whole new language filled with clinic visits, scans, medications, and incredible people who have carried us through one of the hardest seasons of our lives.

This sweatshirt was created from those moments.

Every illustration represents a piece of our story: things that became part of our everyday life, symbols of hope we hold onto, and reminders that even in the hardest seasons, there is still beauty to be found. Whether you’re part of the rare disease community, supporting a loved one, or simply helping raise awareness, we hope this design reminds you that no family walks this road alone.

At the heart of the design is the magnolia flower.

Lola’s full name is Magnolia, making this flower much more than a pretty detail. Magnolias symbolize strength, perseverance, dignity, and resilience… everything we’ve watched grow in our little girl. Even in the most difficult seasons, magnolias bloom boldly, reminding us that beauty and hope can exist alongside hardship.

The Meaning Behind Each Piece

Magnolia Flower — Lola’s namesake and a symbol of strength, resilience, and hope.

Butterfly — Representing the rare disease community and the incredible families connected through a diagnosis none of us expected. A symbol of hope, growth, and transformation. Even the hardest journeys can shape something beautiful.

Ocean Wave — Healing isn’t linear. Some days feel calm, others feel overwhelming, but we keep riding the waves one appointment, one treatment, one day at a time. It also represents the peace our family finds by the ocean, where we can simply be together.

Stars — For the light that continues to guide us through the darkest nights. They remind us that hope is always there, even when we can’t see the entire path ahead.

Syringe and medicine bottle— A symbol of the medications that quietly became part of our everyday routine and the courage it takes to keep showing up.

Medical Glove — In honor of the doctors, nurses, Child Life specialists, and every helping hand that’s cared for Lola with compassion and kindness.

Pink Sneakers — Because even during treatment, she’s still a little girl who deserves to run, play, laugh, and chase childhood.

Coffee Cup — Every medical parent’s unofficial survival tool.

“One Day at a Time” — The words that have carried us through uncertainty and continue to remind us to focus on the next right step.

“LCH Warrior” & “LCH Club” — A club no one ever wants to join, but one filled with the strongest children, fiercest parents, and most compassionate community.

“Rare Girly” — Because rare isn’t all she is but it is part of her story. This little phrase celebrates every child whose diagnosis may be uncommon, but whose joy, strength, and light are anything but.

“Brave. Strong. So Loved.” — Three truths we hope every child facing a medical journey grows up believing.

Giving Back

This fundraiser is especially meaningful because proceeds will benefit the 3rd Floor Oncology Clinic at the Buerger Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where Lola receives her care.

This clinic has become so much more than a place for appointments. It’s where we’ve found comfort, encouragement, and extraordinary people who have loved our family through every scan, every treatment, and every milestone.

Your purchase helps support the clinic that continues to care for children like Lola while also raising awareness for LCH and rare diseases.
