“On October 24, 2019, our lives changed forever. Our then 4-year-old son, Gavin, was rushed to the ER after complaining of headaches. Within days, we learned he likely had brain cancer. The neurosurgeon said he’d never seen a case like Gavin’s in 20 years.

After posting our harrowing story on Facebook, thousands of people across the world began praying for our boy. Over the next 4.5 months in the hospital, Gavin endured immense challenges—six weeks of radiation, multiple surgeries, intubations, a massive stroke, and countless medications. He lost his ability to walk, talk, or eat on his own—basically becoming like a 50lb baby again. My husband took three months off of work and I quit my job to be by his side every day.

God provided through the kindness of others. We witnessed a miracle: in February 2020, Gavin came home. Slowly, he began healing. He relearned how to crawl, then walk. And fast forward to today, he can run, swim, jump, and attend school. This progress has been a dream come true!

But Gavin still faces significant challenges. The stroke, epilepsy, and full-brain radiation left lasting effects:
• He has a g-tube for medication and nutrition
• He suffers from seizures without epilepsy medication
• He struggles with fine motor tasks (e.g., wiping, brushing teeth, showering)
• He’s far behind academically (Kindergarten level at age 9)
• He can’t ride a bike or scooter on his own
• He has speech delays and emotional processing difficulties due to frontal lobe damage

We want more for Gavin than just survival—we want him to thrive. To gain independence, catch up in school, and live a full life.

That’s when we found Brain Health Hawaii and Dr. Keifer, who offers a cutting-edge, non-invasive treatment called Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS). It uses magnetic pulses to stimulate parts of the brain and has shown incredible results in children with similar conditions. Dr. Keifer believes Gavin is an ideal candidate and is hopeful rTMS could help cure his epilepsy and improve many of his daily struggles.

The challenge: insurance won’t cover pediatric treatments—not even Medicaid. Gavin needs 60–80 sessions, totaling around $19,000 out-of-pocket.
