Angel was born with Chromosome 17 Q12 deletion, which caused him multiple health conditions.
1) Multiple heart defects requiring him to have his heart completely rebuilt when he was just 3 days old. 2) Polycystic kidney disease, and he will require a kidney transplant at some point. Currently, his kidney function is at 30%. 3 & 4) Pancreas failure and exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, which at some point will require a pancreas transplant.
And MODY (Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young); currently, his pancreas is failing.
Angel was given to his grandparents to raise when he was a baby after his birth parents decided they weren’t up to being parents. His Mimi and Papa are now Mom and Dad—he knows no one else.
When Angel was 3 years old, he was diagnosed with stage 4 high-risk neuroblastoma and fought through horrific treatment for 1.5 years (chemo, radiation, bone marrow transplant, tumor resection surgery, immunotherapy). Just before he was to ring the bell at the end of treatment, he relapsed.
We are hoping for a miracle and that one day this nightmare will be over and he will be cancer-free.
Because of his heart and kidney disease, cancer treatment has been extremely difficult and dangerous. Traditional treatments have caused him complications that “normal before cancer kids” don’t deal with. He has endured horrific treatment to rid his body of the awful disease, and sadly, so far, we have not been successful.
Angel had a G-tube placed in his belly because he can’t eat enough to grow. He hasn’t grown since he was diagnosed with cancer at 3, largely due to his pancreas failure but also hugely due to his cancer.
Though looking at him, you wouldn’t see the pain he’s in daily as he lives his life even while battling cancer with a smile and hilarious sense of humor.
Angel is the coolest kid you will ever know—so smart, so funny, and so loving.
