These were designed to spread awareness for SMA Syndrome (SMAS), an extremely rare and potentially life threatening disease, otherwise known as Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome, as well as to encourage SMAS warriors to try and find the light in the fight.
Now, what is SMAS exactly?
In short, part of your small intestine (duodenum) becomes compressed (squeezed) between your aorta and Superior Mesenteric Artery, creating a blockage where food cannot pass through. Symptoms include: pain, nausea, vomiting, distention, early satiety, weight loss, malnutrition..etc. Unfortunately right now there is no cure and because of its rarity, there is often a large delay in diagnosis which can result in irreversible damage. This is why spreading awareness is so important, to help save lives with earlier diagnosis and intervention, and then ultimately hopefully lead to finding a cure.
Finding the Light
This design, along with raising awareness, aims to inspire fellow warriors to find the light amidst the challenges. Although it may be difficult, even the slightest glimmer of hope can help motivate us to persevere. Sunflowers are incorporated into the design because they grow through a lot of dirt to always find their way, stand tall, and face the sun. Butterflies symbolize hope, transformation, and endurance.
While we may not always have control over the circumstances or past events, we do have the power to choose how we respond and handle them.
